Her Heart’s in Tennessee
Her Heart’s in Tennessee
Chorus:
She’s got one foot out the door
She says her heart’s in Tennessee
She’s got a lot of friends there
But she says she don’t need me.
She says the music’s better, the whiskey’s smoother
And the men they’re tougher too
She’s got one foot out the door while
She’s saying I don’t want you.
Verse 1:
She came here on a whim
Running wild and being free
We met down at the Walk On Inn
And I thought she wanted me
I had me some high hopes that we could have some fun
I sure liked the look of her, and she wasn’t playing dumb
Verse 2:
We had some shots, we had some beers
We kissed a time or two
I whispered in her ear, “Baby what you wanna do?”
She looked at me, straight in the eye
Then all that I could see
Was her body, her heart and Lucchese® boots
Were headed back to Tennessee.
Leslie and I were in my Yukon one day and she mentioned the line “one foot out the door”. That stuck in my mind and about a week later I brought her what I’d written for this song. We finished it together. It’s a really fun two-step, and it’s really fun for me to sing. We worried a little over the line “the whiskey’s smoother” being too close to a Chris Stapleton’s line about the whiskey being sweeter. We also worried about “the men are tougher too”, or “she wasn’t playing dumb”, but I think they fit the song. The lady in this song is a total bad-ass. I worry a little that this song is too much of a novelty song, but again, it’s really fun to sing and play. Some of the feedback I’ve gotten on this is that it’s a little dated, a throwback to the early 1990’s. And I’m fine with that! Leslie and I have spoken about perhaps calling our songwriting style “geriatric country music”. If there’s a “single” on this album, this is it.
