Coming Back Home

Been away so long that I can’t
Remember when I left
Crazy days and long nights
Is my life, I guess.

Phone calls and text message
Just has to do
There’s nothing like the feeling when
I finally get to you.

Chorus:
Time goes so slow when I’m coming back home
When I’m home
All I want to do is be with you.
Holding you is the best part of being back home.
When I’m home – All I want to do is be with you.

Empty hotel rooms, cafés at night
Long, lonely dark highways
Bright city lights

Living on the road is the
Life that I chose
Why you’re still with me, well
I don’t really know.

Repeat Chorus Twice with Rounds

Both Leslie and I liked this song the best of all the new songs on this album, at least initially. The original progression was titled “Easy D” as I worked on it because it’s in the key of D, and it’s easy to play. I brought three verses downstairs for Leslie and me to work on. I played it a few times for Leslie and she took some notes. After about 30 minutes she said she was out, and had nothing for this song. One of the lines she had written down was “Holding you’s the best part of being back home”. She told me that I could finish the song myself, but that she just didn’t feel the song. I took it upstairs and left it on my desk. A few days later I started all new lyrics and it was based on that one line that she wrote, “holding you’s the best part of being back home”. I remember writing the melody in my head and how much I liked the part of the chorus where I sing “When I’m home”. I pretty much wrote most of the first 2 verses and the chorus. Leslie wrote the last 2 verses except the last line of the last verse which I changed from “heaven only knows” to “I don’t really know”. One funny thing that happened when we recorded this was the intro chords are D A D A. Fred Kosak said, “looks like somebody has daddy issues”. My favorite part of this song is when the drums and bass go double-time on the chorus. It feels to me like the guy in the song knows that time is going so slow, but he’s hurrying as fast as he can. Scott Smith had the idea of having a chorus “round” at the end of the song, so we asked Kate, Fred and Alissa to sing the chorus at the end a few times with me, using a multi-directional microphone. Scott took that and did I don’t know what to it, and it turned out really cool. Then I thought that the vibe of this song is pretty one-on-one personal, and I wanted to keep it that way – but at the same time I really liked what Scott did with that ending. I asked Scott to take the ending and create a new song, titled “Time Goes So Slow” which is the last song on the album.
