Where I Belong
WHERE I BELONG
Intro: (2 times)
There’s the house where I grew up as a child
A couple of lifetimes ago.
They tried to tame me, but I ended up wild
A rebel still too young to know
There’s the school where they tried to clip my wings
It’s no surprise, I refused
I learned that everything’s tied up in strings
I was – disillusioned and confused
Chorus:
A rebel doing my best to get along
Under the radar I’d fly
Never a place where I felt I belonged
Not ever knowing just why
(Intro 2 times)
I didn’t think I’d be happy on that road
I’d never be satisfied
-Choices made added to my heavy load
An emptiness remained inside.
Chorus:
Bridge - Instrumental only
Then friends decided that you and I should meet
The sparks flew right from the start
Thought I was being so cool and discreet
But then love opened my heart.
Last chorus:
A rebel doing my best to get along
Under the radar I flew
Now there’s a place that I know I belong
- That’s right here, right now, with you
Repeat last chorus
Repeat last line of last chorus:
This song has gotten me more grief than any song I’ve ever written. I always think of Pee Wee Herman, “I’m a loner, Dottie, a rebel”. Well, even though I grew up in a fairly nice part of Dallas, I was a rebel for that time and place in the early 1970’s. My wings were never clipped. I actually remember giving the “peace sign” to people on the street, and protesting the Vietnam War, though this song isn’t about that. It’s a love song, an introverted love song. It’s for Leslie, of course, and details the blind date we met on. I’ve always known exactly where I belong since I met Leslie!
