She Cried
She Cried
She saw it all she watched me fall
And then she cried
She cried, oh how she cried
Looked in my eyes she saw the lies
And then she cried
It hurt, deep down inside
Chorus:
What can I say I’m just a man
I’ll probably do it all again
Break her heart tear it apart
Leave her teardrops in the sand
She said to me please set me free
And then she cried
She cried oh how she cried
She packed her things, she threw her ring
And then she cried
It hurt, deep down inside
Bridge:
I always thought that rules could bend
I got caught with her best friend
And now there’s no fence to mend
And then she cried
Oh how she cried
She slammed the door, can’t take no more
And then she cried
She cried, oh how she cried
She said so long, and now she’s gone
And still she cried.
It hurt deep down inside
Leslie wrote all but about 1 line of the lyrics in this song. I came downstairs one afternoon and she handed me a sheet a paper that she’d written lyrics on. She said she wished she knew someone who could write the music to this song she had written. She had 3 short verses and asked me to help her with the melody. Leslie is really not very musical most of the time. Sometimes she can hit a note perfectly, but normally she has a hard time. I made a recording of her trying to tell me what the melody should be, which I’ve promised never to let anyone else hear. I was able to get enough from her that I was able to started playing a progression and sang her verses. She said I got it exactly right. Over the next hour that we worked on it I told her that the song was super short and needed at least 3 more verses. She proceeded to write some new verses, and the song was done. We shared it with the fiddle player from the Stillhouse Junkies, Alissa Wolf, who plays on all my albums. Alissa noted that “she sure cries a lot”. I suggested to Leslie that we change half of the “she cried, oh how she cried” lines to “it hurt, deep down inside”. That was my contribution to the song. The song is still pretty short, but we both like it. This was recorded with the Stillhouse Junkies as well as Clay Lowder on drums (The Junkies are a string band with no drummer). The bass player on this song is Floyd Pepper, a pseudonym for someone who asked to remain anonymous! This is another song that is really fun for me to sing and play.
